Green Parrot Snake (Leptophis ahaetulla), Campanario, Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica. This is a difficult snake to handle. Here it is biting the hand of my friend Prof. Jose Manuel Mora. This was in part an experiment to observe the effects of its mild venom (here the fang at rear of mouth has not yet punctured the skin; this venom has primarily anticoagulent effects) and part photo-op (imagine me pleading for "one more shot" while Jose was shouting "ouch"). The venom caused some bleeding, pain, and mild swelling over a period of about 1 hour. Spanish names are Bejuquillo verde, lora falsa gigante.

Green Parrot Snake (Leptophis ahaetulla), Campanario, Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica. This is a difficult snake to handle. Here it is biting the hand of my friend Prof. Jose Manuel Mora. This was in part an experiment to obseve the effects of its mild venom (note the fang at rear of mouth that has not yet made a puncture; this venom has primarily anticoagulent effects) and part photo-op. I was pleading for "one more shot" while Jose was shouting "ouch" and words less printable. Ultimately the rear fangs found their mark (see later image in this set), with the venom causing some bleeding, pain, and mild swelling over a period of about 1 hour. Spanish names are Bejuquillo verde, lora falsa gigante.
