A Praying mantis that is a vine mimic. Sirena, Corcovado National Park, Costa Rica. I found this mantis in this position, in perfect late afternoon light. There are dry vines nearby that look exactly like this insect, but here it was clearly visible perched on a Lantana flower, perhaps waiting for a butterfly to visit. Copyright J.H. Marden.
Jaguar at the mouth of the Rio Claro, Corcovado National Park, on the last frame of film I had that afternoon. This cat subsequently swam across the river (about a meter deep following heavy rainy season storms) and we had an interesting encounter. Do not use this image in any form without my permission. Green Parrot Snake (Leptophis ahaetulla), Campanario, Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica. On multiple occasions we have found this species in a hibiscus hedge at the border between primary forest and a small garden plot. Spanish names are Bejuquillo verde, lora falsa gigante.
Crossing a small river in the early dry season near the Pacific coast of southern Costa Rica. This road is being paved and bridges added, which is leading to rapid development of what used to be an undeveloped paradise.
